Title: Supporting Content Learning with Technology for Students with Disabilities

This session will provide an overview of the Innovation Configuration "Supporting content learning with technology for students with disabilities". Discussion will include the concepts of assistive technology, general and content-specific technologies for use during instruction and assessment, how to align instructional technologies with the UDL framework, and technology considerations during IEP development. Additionally, we will include implications for teacher education.

Maya Israel, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Her primary areas of research involve the use of instructional technologies and strategies to increase learning and engagement of struggling learners including students with disabilities in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Her projects include: (a) developing and examining UDL-based video games and gamified virtual internships focused on STEM content and professional practices, and (b) exploring students’ use of computing and other technology-based learning tools as a way that increase persistence, collaborative problem solving, and computational thinking skills.

Matthew Marino, Ph.D., is an associate professor of Exceptional Education at the University of Central Florida and a former secondary special education, science, and technology teacher. His research, which has been supported by IES, OSEP, and NSF, focuses on the design and implementation of technology-enhanced curricular materials for use in inclusive classrooms. Dr. Marino was a member of the design team for the national award-winning STEM videogame “You Make Me Sick!” and award winning technology-enhanced science curriculum “Alien Rescue”. He has conducted large-scale intervention research in 14 states with over 2000 students during the decade. Dr. Marino is a technical reviewer for the National Science Foundation and a member of the leadership team for the Universal Design for Learning Implementation and Research Network.
