I have been missing out on these conversations, and would like to join in somehow. :)

Started reading Tichi; I did not know about Ida B Wells previously, but her story is a powerful one. It makes me very upset that we still have "lynchings" going on today, the whole mentality that it is ok to use violent and fatal force when dealing with black people. The many recent stories of police killing black men just makes this all too real.

Just for the sake of a reality check, is police brutality and "over-violence" just focused on african-americans, or do others suffer from that as well? In other words, what other stories of violence are not being sensationalized by the media?

There is a huge movement of putting cameras on officers as a way to help find "evidence" of what really goes on at a scene. In the vein of our previous discussion with Dave Hohman on the topic of tracking, I don't think more is better in this sense. It seems to me, in all cases, instead of more data we need stronger relationships. I am not convinced that the last decade of ever-increasing data collection has actually helped that much. In fact, we have too much data - we don't even know what to do with it.

Friends,

The weather report indicates that it will be clear and 50s this evening. Almost, but not quite warm enough to be outside, I think.

So, let’s meet this evening at the Blind Pig on Walnut at 7 PM. A bit late this time because there is a Unit 4 School Board Candidate Forum at 5 – 7 PM at

IBEW 601 Hall

3301 Boardwalk Dr

Champaign

(Off of North Prospect, past the Carmike Theater)

I intend to go to that, so may be a bit late to the Blind Pig

Other things to talk about:

1.       Lots of discussion about  Paulo Freire, Ivan Illich, Myles Horton, and now Cecelia Tichi’s “Civic Passions”. There should be course credit associated with CTRL-Shift meetings. J

2.       Upward Bound. Can we participate? I’ll share info that I have from Sherrika Ellison

3.       Perhaps Jeff, Lisa, and/or Martin will want to talk about the discussion with Kathy Brown discussing Peoria Programming?

4.       Joe has been working with Travis and Lenny on the CS part of the Science Olympiad. Looking forward to hearing about that.

5.       Maya is leading the STEM+C proposal submissions. Deadlines approach.

6.       We should publish the Kenwood Collaborative Framework on the CTRL-Shift site, and perhaps write something more about it for print.

See you this evening,

George
